When I was college age (not that I ever succeeded at collage) I lived in the basement suite of an animal hospital with a bunch of students. About once a week we would get to assist in nite time emergencies. It was a fair trade for the free accommodation we called “the dog house.” The deep freeze we shared had green garbage bags of animals they bumped on the left, our frozen food on the right.
I remember the doctors having a debate over what to call the doggy do. They tried fecal matter, feces, poo, crap, dog do, excremental, and a few other expletives. They finally settled on plain old shit. Since then I’ve never thought of shit as a swear word, just a simple, easy to remember, very descriptive clinical term.
Synonyms can be used to soften the blow of a harsh word but also to subtly alter the meaning and make it more palatable. Take sin for example. I’ve heard it referred to as a little slip up, an indiscretion, a relapse, fall, mistake, Bo Bo, screw up, infraction, transgression, violation.
God simply calls it sin. If we are to be of one mind with Him and to be seekers of truth, we should be using the same terminology. The word “SIN” is not a politically correct term. It conjures visions of a judgmental God who is intolerant of any human failure. Actually that’s a fairly accurate description. Any sin incurs a complete separation from a holy God and requires the penalty of death. That’s where His son Jesus comes in. He paid the ultimate price for our sin so we don’t have to. (not as though we ever could.)
So why are we so adverse to using the word sin? If God in fact hates sin then it’s true that he requires us to repent of it. If we love our sin more than God, his requirement of us to repent is anathema. Of course we have the option of altering our idea of who God is. After all, how could a God of love ever send people to hell? Sin is just an illusion that we can chose not to believe in. If we eliminate the word sin from our vocabulary, we could live in …bliss.
Words are powerful.
